Millie Brown is known by many for her infamous SXSW performance with Lady Gaga in 2014 where she made global headlines; throwing up on the pop singer. Brown drank gleaming green milk, which she then vomited on to Gaga's breasts, before drinking a bottle of black milk, climbing onto a mechanical bull with the singer, and doing it again.

Cut to April 2015 when an unexpected meeting to assist in promoting the show, Rainbow Body, her fourth Solo Exhibition by the British performance artist. The series is an evolution of Brown’s original and most recognized performance work, Rainbow Body presents a depiction of the Los Angeles sky. A post-contemporary study on abstract expressionism within a California palette, each piece tells the story of LA: its past and its present, its light and its dark. Developed from her “non-traditional,” performance-based methods of painting from the inside out, using almond milk, food coloring, stomach and hands, Brown creates aesthetically whimsical paintings with a deep underlining of raw human emotion.

Millie gets a lot of slack. Upon meeting her, I admit, I didn’t know what to expect. But exceeded any predisposed notions, one might have. Millie exudes grace, kindness and intellect when speaking to anyone. She is sweet natured, lovely and extremely talented. When further looking into her process I began interpreting it in the way most should...as a spiritual release.

Millie is in fact viewing the body as a spiritual vessel, her cleanse becomes the pigment, foundation for the canvas. Brown pushes physical and mental boundaries to reach a state of enlightenment from which creative expression and healing derives. Rooted in Tibetan Buddhist theology, Rainbow Body is the phenomenon of viewing spiritual transcendence from a third person perspective. Rainbow Body is based on three wisdoms, representing the three categories of paintings: ground, presence, and energy.

Each piece takes a minimum of 3 days to produce, 2 days of fasting to prepare physical and mental clarity. Artist must be in clear and positive mindset to put her best energy into each piece.

“I started exploring performance art and it was an idea that came to be because I wanted to use my body to create a performance that was about the beauty from inside out. I came up with the idea of actually vomiting a rainbow using my body as a tool to create paintings." - Millie Brown
"Millie's latest body of work is comprised of post-abstract expressionist paintings made of food coloring, almond milk, stomach and hands on canvas. They are a reflection of her personal and professional evolution. She's at an exciting point in her career and setting her place in the art market." says curator Nathaly Charria.
The two week pop up show was presented by Flaunt Magazine, Jay Luchs, Rocket In My Pocket’s, Nicole EhrlichNathaly Charria's Natology. Shortly after the closing of Rainbow Body in LA, Millie headed to New York to collaborate with the Marina Abramovic Institute and FRIEDE + CO on “Blinded by the Light."

The collaboration with Millie Brown and the Marina Abromovic Institute was originally scheduled in mid May but due to unforeseen events has been postponed for a for a future date. In Blinded by the Light Millie Brown will immerse herself in a room of light and looping sound, while grains of sand gradually fall onto her head and body until she is completely covered. The performance will result in Brown buried in a pyramid of sand, physically marking time. Brown explores elements of stillness, time, and meditation in this work, while inviting the public to share moments of deep concentration. Through four cycles of the sun, Brown will continuously submerse herself in light, allowing her body and mind to absorb its energy in all forms: physically, sonically, and symbolically.
Focusing on the actual sound of the sun, she aims to transcend into a state of pure light. This work is an extension of Brown’s interest in exploring durational time-based art.
In her own words, “thed in a singular column of light from ceiling to floor, with a constant stream of sand falling from above representing the time of light decelerated to allow myself to exist in an alternate plane of time in space. My body will be immersed in a pyramid of light and time, creating a vessel, in which I will solely exist throughout the performance.” Brown will engage with traditional methods of passing time in eastern religion. The sound component of the piece is appropriated from NASA recordings of the sound of sun, collected by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, launched into orbit in 1995.

Millie is a visionary artist of tremendous proportion exercising a depth of range within her creativity. Her body of work will continue to push the boundaries of comformity. The depth within she pushes herself to create from her soul, to share her beliefs despite judgement, she is without fear, trusting her process, Brown is more than her insides, she is of the mind, body and spirit – I am excited to watch her artistic growth. No doubt that whatever she will create will be captivating, innovative and make us explore our boundaries of creative release.
