ALAC Barker Hangar Santa Monica Airport Artbook | D.A.P. hosts American artist Chris Johanson who will sign copies of two new publications focusing on his work. The first, a Monograph from Phaidon, represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date monograph on Johanson’s work, produced in close collaboration with the artist. Johanson’s idiosyncratic paintings, drawings and sculptural installations portray the contemporary human condition with sincerity and wit. Constructed from salvaged materials and touching on themes such as humankind’s relationship to the natural environment, Johanson’s art can be meditative, humorous and confrontational – all at the same time. The second, Totalities, documents Johanson's recent "contemporary living installation" at Deitch Projects, New York. The theme of the work is the planet Earth and its place in the universe. His work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions, including the Istanbul Biennial, the SITE Santa Fe Biennial and the Whitney Biennial. DISCUSSION Dave Hickey: Pirates & Farmers 2pm, Saturday ALAC Theatre Barker Hangar Santa Monica Airport KCRW presents Dave Hickey in conversation with LA Times art critic David Pagel about his new book Pirates & Farmers. Arguably one of America’s most unconventional art/cultural critics working today, Dave Hickey has, once again, assembled a collection of searing essays that challenge the critics cultural status quo. Hickey recently announced his retirement from the field of criticism due to the new extreme popularity, oversimplification and commoditization of art: “I miss being an elitist and not having to talk to idiots.” Author of popular books such as Air Guitar: Essays on Art & Democracy and The Invisible Dragon: Four Essays on Beauty, Hickey focuses this new collection of writings on cultural phenomena such as the super collector, the trope of the biennale, the loss of looking and much, much more. David Pagel is a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times and has written nearly 500 articles since 1997. He serves as Chair of the Art Department at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. www.rampub.com/culture+theory/978-1-905464-72-2 BOOK SIGNING Bettina Hubby: Uniforms 3pm, Saturday Artbook | D.A.P. ALAC Barker Hangar Santa Monica Airport Artbook | D.A.P. hosts artist Bettina Hubby. Bettina Hubby will be present to sign copies of her new book Uniforms. Bettina Hubby takes a detour from her curatorial, community-based projects with Uniforms, an artist’s book of paper collages as precise and elegant as they are chaotic and devious. Here, clothed bodies collide, recombine and somersault across the page; machines mimic birds; jackets seem to genuflect in prayer. Constructed with the muted hues and contemplative negative space of a Noh play, Hubby’s mash-ups reassemble the familiar photographic imagery of fashion, commerce and reportage into a open-ended riff on personal identity and the human organism. Complementing the work is an original fictional narrative by Dave Cull, delivered in brief installments throughout the book. Uniforms is published in an edition of 750 copies on the occasion of Pretty Limber, Hubby’s fall 2013 exhibition at Klowden Mann Gallery. artbook.com/9780982365397.html SCREENING Stanya Kahn: Works on Video 4pm, Saturday ALAC Theatre Barker Hangar Santa Monica Airport Artadia, the fund for art and dialogue, and Susanne Vielmetter gallery present a focused screening of works by artist Stanya Kahn. Artadia Executive Director Carolyn Ramo and artist Stanya Kahn will introduce the video works: Happy Song For You (5 min), Arms Are Overrated (17 min), For the Birds (4 min), Who Do You Think You Are (8min), It's Cool, I'm Good (35 min). Stanya Kahn is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in video/digital media with a practice that includes sound design, drawing, writing and performance. Her work engages with strategies of communication, the body in the world, affective power, and the making, use and abuse of meaning. Humor, pathos and the uncanny emerge as central modes in a hybrid media practice that seeks to re-work relationships between fiction and document, the real and the hyper-real, narrative time and the synchronic time of impulse. Words, actions, geographies, people and ideas seek out agency in moving pictures, drawings, texts and installations. Recent solo shows include the New Museum in New York, Pigna Projectspace in Rome, and Cornerhouse in Manchester (a survey of her solo works from 2008 to 2012) with an accompanying book. Kahn is a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow in Film/Video. artadia.org About ALAC Art Los Angeles Contemporary, now in its fifth year, is the International Contemporary Art fair of the West Coast, held January 30 – February 2, 2014 at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport.
